the first net.art i encountered was "logo.gif" at osnabrück__... (if you discount bianca's love shack_ she had it going on long before_) (or the frictionless surface bbs on fidonet before that -- always wonder why linux has the penguin mascott when opus bbs software had it long before_!) they ended up crashing the _ars electronica_ servers while running it_... i recall i liked it_... partly because of the crash many miles away___...

beyond the pop art connotations it was a reaching out into this swelling sea of dare i say web, and the humor of the presentation was like none other i've seen_! they just had this _artist taking herself seriously gig_ down pat_! delivering with a straight face that which is _logo(s)_ on the web___..... this was still in the time when one was hitting REAL homepages on the net, today one hardly stumbles upon them_..__everything has gotten so anonymous_...

(par example_, who works at nettime, i have no idea, i thought it was a berlin-holland thing, but they broadcast from new york, but it's definitely not rhizome_....__you get the idea_....)

at any rate you had all these homemade logos collected and they just kept scrolling down, while talking all this trash of how important this was_.

the presentation was of course in the film context ---

(_even dirk of jodi made videos whilst still in the netherlands_) and filmmakers having tasted the speed, the beauty of movement, the juxtaposition in montage, the textures, the colors, the propensity for paying homage to reality and truth (sorry mr.weible), the rhythms, the ceaseless _running_ of huge clattering machines, not to mention dust_! and, yes of course, the ability to transport_.... to make a place so inviting and alive one walks with___.....

--- and that is what made this worldwidesampling of logo.gif so humorous___...

well look at those networking guys - wish we could reduce them to electrics again, and look at those programmers and wish we could conjure her back into a script girl or better yet a best boy_! this may happen all by itself as we internalize the network complexity____.....

i appreciate the universities employing all these net.art starlets_....

the new medium seems to be the emissary_.... be it the indoctrinated student or the dressed up representative__.... or the soon to be manufactured one (is this what heath is up to_?)___.... just as pollock used a stick to dribble on the canvas rather than splashing from a can or using his hands and fingers_....

a note to the curators would --> figure the gimmick ::

with olia it's a highly developed sense of place, bordering on the activist, preserving the idea of the journey___... be it coming home, appearing here and there, or teleporting___....

with meta it's visualization of the array, trying to give it connotation__...

with jodi it's the broken screen, the broken text, the broken image as metaphor for the network__...

with mark amerikkka (what a dufus name_! i can't get over this...) its to be the ring leader, the offscreen announcer, the .org emulsifier__....

with integer it's being everywhere and everything at once, the axis of kritique_.... (i caress your firewire)

with etoy it's orange and bald in the legoland stockexchange/kz_....

with eyescratch it's kunstkritik (am i getting this right_?)__...

:: then curate the show by combining gimmicks modulatory, just as you combined paintings in the white cube :: make these artists work in each others specifications to create a new piece for your show_!! this should be the price of stardom! it would also create an unprecedented level of discourse among artist not seen since the early days of 7-11 (_how much are those archives going for_?_)_.. (i'm just taking the cue off the vinyl video show here__! not to mention the browser shows_...)

come on! it's written, the will + testament )du=#acdcac(, nobody believes that was for russia, something banal and senseless died, it's time to abandon the browser and leave phpl to the mailing lists (ascii ribbon campaign or not)__....

net.art will rise again when alexei kicks off the next round__... (has he moved beyond a 386 yet_?)

of course net.art could have progressed quite differently, had vrml made it, to get back to the post that kicked this discussion off, instead of all the senseless smileyface buttons on aol 6.0 (jodi now releases, as ars electronica occurs, concurrently with them_!). Then it probably would have made the smooth transition from filmic discourse to architectural discourse___... imagine all those nameless cadcam operators uploading their stuff_!!!! we might have built our way out of the white box_! or out of the maze_! or out of the arena_!

The internet is a vast assemblage of information, sloshing about to the point & click of user interaction.

Trapped, like a vast ocean between two continents, the internet is only assessable via very complex machines dedicated to the art of the network.

Like any medium in the early stage of its existence, it is still transparent to its inner mechanism, frustrating the casual user who feels herself drawn into a web of absurd compromises trying to configure her play station to accept the networks traffic.
